Kenyon College I'm a graduate of Kenyon College in Gambier, OH. It has been called one of the most haunted places in the USA. Phil Donahue once broadcast a show from Kenyon because of the rumor that it is one of the "seven gates of hell." It's difficult to choose a story to tell - there was the frat boy who was run over by a train on his initiation night a hundred years ago. The student with the wacky afro who killed himself and still visits his old room. The kid who fell down the elevator shaft. Et cetera. The oldest building on campus, however, has the coolest story. It was built in 1824 and, at that time, it served as dorm, classroom, dining hall, office, everything. When I was in school, it was used as an upperclassmen's dorm. It was also being used as a dorm in 1954, when it burned to the ground. That night, there had been a dance on campus, and girls had been invited (Kenyon didn't have a coed class until 1970). Some of the girls had managed to stay after the dance was over, and were in the rooms with the boys. The fire broke out, and the girls were nervous about getting caught. Perhaps this kept them from making a quick escape. Students died, both male and female. So, the college started getting over the tragedy, and rebuilt the dorm using the same old stones. They rebuilt the foundation, so the new floors are about 18 inches higher than the old ones. Now, when the ghosts walk around, the current residents of the dorm rooms see disembodied feet walking on ghostly floors, which are 18 inches below the ceiling. In addition, there are reports of people being shaken awake because of the "fire." My own scary experience occured in the basement of that building. I doubt itwas really ghostly, but it was pretty cool. One very, very stormy night I was watching the XFiles with a friend of mine. It was the scariest episode I've seen - the one in which the crazy guy kidnaps young women and gives them lobotomies. Anyway, my buddy and I were scared stiff, frozen to our seats. The storm was blowing hard outside. During the show, all the French doors along the side of the room blew open at the same time. The gauzy curtains billowed into the room. That was damned scary. End of story. For all you ghost hunters out there, Gambier, OH is a place you should look into....
